Artist’s Statement for Mirror, Mirror and Personae Series
©1999 Barbara Noah

The etchings, etching collages and paintings on photo emulsion in these series are face and figure simulations, in which non-figurative imagery represents parts of a figure. The image components represent memory and potential, i.e., the past and the future. They refer to basic human needs like respiration, hunger and thirst, as well as the temptation to explore and the drive to survive. They also allude to phenomena like gravity, weather, conception, inspiration, illusions, and a gamut of emotions from fear and anger to euphoria. Their references range from the commonplace to the cosmic, the micro to the macro and the ridiculous to the sublime.

These big themes, with their varied possibilities for interpretation or extrapolation, are juxtaposed with humor. The resulting images are variously rational, irrational, calming, goofy, beautiful or frightening -- like life.
